The castle of Paphos has had a hard life - it was originally a Byzantine fort to protect the harbor, the castle was then destroyed by an earthquake in 1222, rebuilt by the Lusignans, then dismantled by the Venetians, only to be restored a century later by the Ottomans. It has served as a prison, fortress, warehouse, and now serves as a backdrop for outdoor festivals and events...when I was there a band was performing Bon Jovi in Greek...yikes!
